Communities and Cities

Necessities Nes Cities

Like our logo, God chose our name too. We were not always called Necessities UK, but The Bare Necessities. We changed our name as we didn’t want to give people just the bare minimum, but more. It became really clear God ultimately leads the vision of the charity and the work we wish to do.

Necessities UK is a unique and practical name for our charity. Its triple meaning plays on the Hebrew root word Nes נס which are where the Hebrew words miracle (Nes) and banner (Nissi) are derived from. These are two words that may not be unfamiliar if you have seen a dreidel before or heard the name of God Jehovah Nissi. Another meaning is from the Latin word Necesse which means ‘be needful.’ Needful doesn’t necessarily mean one category of persons as human beings we all have needs so are all needful.

With the three meanings, we have translated to Jesus will do miracles for the needful in all communities and cities.

Biblically, God has always seen the strength in a strong community who work together. Sometimes, this has not been a good thing.

The Tower of Babel Genesis Chapter 11 verses 1 - 9 (NLT)

1 At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words. As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there.

They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”

But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6 “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”

In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.

Despite the bad plans of the people of Babel, one verse that stands out is verse 6. God, Himself saw how valuable a strong and united community is. Nothing is impossible for them. We know by establishing strong communities in a godly way there is nothing the communities and individuals within them will find impossible!
